Understanding Plagiarism and its Dangers in Academics

  • Type of paper: Essay (Any Type)
  • Subject: Art
  • Pages: 2

Academic integrity is essential for both students and academic researchers. Plagiarism is more than just taking someone’s academic work and using it without his/her consent. Plagiarism involves the use of a different person’s idea whether in different wordings or not but in a manner that qualifies for an offense of academic theft. Plagiarism is the biggest offense that learners make while studying or doing academic research. Numerous students do not understand what constitutes plagiarism and get guilty of plagiarizing other peoples’ work without realizing it. Whether unfamiliar or not, when caught the consequences are the same. Plagiarizing other researchers work affects students’ grades adversely. As a student, one must refrain from committing plagiarism since no educational institutions encourage the crime. Plagiarism casts a shadow to a students’ academic reputation in the rest of their life and may also subject the victim to a court of law when the person whose work has been stolen sues the victim. In the corporate world, plagiarism is treated as a crime. Universities consider plagiarism as a severe crime as well and have established mechanisms of detecting plagiarized work during submission by students in their portals. Professors issue warnings against academic theft and make it known that plagiarism would ultimately lead to discontinuation and dismissal of the culprits. The use of special computer programs such as Turnitin help professors checks students’ work accurately against plagiarism before punishing them. The act of plagiarism has been manifest in top colleges; a good example is Harvard University in the US. In the 2013/2014 academic year, the Senate dismissed about 70 students forcing them to discontinue education due to plagiarism. Students copy each other’s exams and assignments due to laziness and this is treated as a violation of excellent academic conduct. Every college stipulates clearly that plagiarism is illegal and prohibited. Academic researchers must awake and understand the dangers of plagiarism on students’ success and future in their educational programs. Any researcher who plagiarizes a student’s assignment must be punished heavily since this amount to a permanent notation on the students’ academic record.
